Bienvenue à La Tourterie
the beauty and tranquility of rural France in our beautifully restored
We look forward to welcoming you to our privately owned 5 bedroomed gite/holiday home 'La Maison Seronera', which sleeps up to 11 people. We are situated in the Charente region of France close to the border of the Dordogne and Haute Vienne. Surrounded by gently rolling hills, maize and sunflower fields the quiet hamlet of La Tourterie makes an ideal base for walking, mountain biking, go-karting, horse riding, wine tasting, golfing, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, sight seeing or simply relaxing in the sun by the pool with a good book and a glass of wine.
The area has a wealth of charm and tranquility, from the South Charente with its echoes (but fewer tourists) of the next door Dordogne to the gently sloping vineyards of the wealthy Cognac producing West Charente. With its sleepy riverside villages, fine displays of Romanesque art, chateaux, the stunning and bustling town of Angouleme and the Lakes of Haute Charente on your doorstep, we think that La Tourterie will provide a comfortable base from which to explore the surrounding area.
La Tourterie is a tiny hamlet 15 minutes walk from the quiet village of Montemboeuf. Here you will find 2 small bars, a Spar store, boulangerie, charcuterie, post office and bank. It is only 15 minutes drive from the pretty town of La Rochfaucauld with its imposing chateau and full range of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. The nearby large leisure lake at Lavaud provides scenic picnic sites, sandy beaches, swimming, sailing and many other nautical and outdoor activities, along with a fantastic adventure park for the children. It is also here that the keen mountain bikers will find some well established routes around the lakes and surrounding countryside. There are tracks for all levels, from short 6km routes through to over 50km routes. For keen golfers there is a superb golf club nearby at Golf de la Preze which offers an 18 hole championship course, an 18 hole pitch and putt course, a driving range and practice facilities plus full equipment rental options if you don't want to bring all your gear with you, all just 10 minutes away near Rouzede. There are further courses around, one at St Junien around 30 minutes drive, another course in Angouleme, two more at Limoges and a beautiful course in the stunning region of Cognac, around 1 hours drive away.
For more information on some of the great activities in the area please take a look at our 'Activites for Children' page.
Also don't miss the Montemboeuf 'Imprevu' music and arts festival in early September, when crowds of people descend on the village to listen to a variety of bands playing music from folk right through to punk. ( http://imprevumontemboeuf.free.fr/ )

Information on the area.
The Charente is one of four departments making up the region of Poitou-Charentes with Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sevres and Vienne. Each area has distinctive features but all have a generous share of river. The French traditionally consider the Charentais as somewhat laid back, and a bit zany! With its well preserved yet domesticated countryside and virtually every food product available fresh from the woods, fields, rivers and nearby ocean, the Charentais is generally quite happy with his peaceful lot.
The bustling and historic walled city of Angouleme is well worth a visit with its unmissable cathedral to Saint Pierre. After strolling around the ramparts, you can sit and enjoy one of the ‘Plat du Jours’ the many restaurants have on offer in the square or one of its winding mediaeval streets. Held in the third weekend in September is the spectacular Circuit des Ramparts, which is the only vintage car rally held inside a French town. Alternatively visit the Nautilus waterpark in Angouleme, an ideal place to "cool off" and have fun. Spend a day wandering around Cognac with it's ancient streets and mansions of the brandy merchants and take a tour around one of the major cognac producers such as Hennessy, Martell or Remy Martin. Here you will encounter cellars full of aging cognacs some over a century old, and taste some of the exceptional matured amber that is Cognac, described by Victor Hugo as “The Liquor of the gods”.
The Charente has one of the richest displays of Romanesque art with all variations represented, more than its fair share of stunning chateaux, activity lakes, not to mention its packed programme of top quality summer festivals and markets. Alternatively just take it easy and mosey around some of the traditional market towns and picturesque villages immersing yourself in French culture and taste some of the local food and wine along the way.
These are but a few of the activities on offer in the spectacular region of the Charente. Explore to your hearts content, and we hope to welcome you soon to both the Charente and La Tourterie.
